About The Craftsman
Steven maintains a one man shop in the small island community of Jamestown, RI. He creates handcrafted furniture from fresh wood, reclaimed lumber or both. Unique pieces of wood are also used in his hand turned bowls and natural wood sculptures.
Steven developed his interest in wood working at a young age, starting as an apprentice working alongside highly skilled craftsmen. Twenty five years and countless pieces of furniture later, he has honed his skills and learned the techniques necessary to design and construct fine hand crafted furniture.
Steven incorporates period forms into his work -- Shaker sensibilities, classic re-interpretation, and studio styles (among others). Working primarily with solid premium lumber that he selects, matching colors and grain patterns to ensure a beautiful patina. Details like pegged mortise & tenon construction, dovetails, wedged thru tenons, and breadboard ends are all carefully used where applicable. Finishes are applied by hand.
Only one piece is built at a time -- and each is unique in it's own way. All items are signed & dated, and you can find Steven's signature compass carving on many pieces.
